Still Lives
There’s something quietly rebellious about painting over found original work, adding unrequested colour to these carefully constructed arrangements.
Kavel obscures the “important” parts with blocks of paint. The flowers, the china, the thoughtful collections of objects - all partially erased. Text is added to the surface, phrases of love, longing and regret. “I still…“ Together, the series shift from observation to confession. What is covered feels just as present as what remains visible. Each painting carrying its own variation. The words have a personal resonance to the artist, messages to lost loves, lives, times and friendships, whilst still leaving room for the viewers own story.
